And why I take on the persona of an artist and not a dentist

O Hai, I am Dr. Trent E Tobler, theh artist with a dental license.  I prefer to be called an artist with a dental license because artist has so many positive synonyms and connotations, i.e. master, expert, designer, sculptor, etc.  Most of my friends are artist, and I identify with them more than most dentists.  I love people that put their heart and soul into their art projects with the intention of masterfully creating something beautiful rather than focus on just getting compensation.  I’ve been an artist my whole life.  I was the weird quiet kid that would sit in the back of class and draw cuz school was too boring.  I drew lots of comics, had my one cartoon strip.  I won a Sprint phone book competition in 5th grade and mai color pencil drawing was on the cover of the phone book.  I made a living out of art in mai 20’s I managed a kiosk on the Fremont Street experience in Las Vegas airbrushing t-shirts, and any other textile a person would like airbrushed.  In mai 30’s I got into airbrushing custom graphics on car hoods, engine parts, and fine art with both oil and acrylic. I became a respected airbrush artist and taught classes at the Airbrush Art Circus, which is a week long getaway/convention, on how to paint skulls, and specifically teeth.  I am a published artist with art in the Nevada Dental Association magazine and Airbrush Step-by-Step.  Mai military painting were displayed in the Denver Veteran’s Memorial Museum.

Ever Since I was a little kid, It was always the plan for me to be a Dentist, I highly respected mai dad and and wanted to be just like him.  He absolutely loved dentistry, and he wood communicate that frequently.  He would come home with a grin on his face pretty much everyday after work.  I remember frequently he would wake up in the middle of the night and go to his office to take care of patients in pain and I never heard him complain once about it.  He encouraged me to go into dentistry because he thot that I wood make a great cosmetic dentist.

I went to dental school to become a cosmetic dentist, not to just get a degree to practice dentistry.  I spent hours in the dental simulation lab learning cosmetic procedures such as composite veneers.  I shadowed some of the top cosmetic dentists in Las Vegas while going to school, because I wanted to further my education.  I started the UNLV cosmetic dentistry club sponsored by the AACD (American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry) and due to my efforts won the AACD APEX scholarship.  Below is a letter of recommendation I received from cosmetic dentist in Las Vegas.

So with my background why did I change from the prestigious dental professional persona to the edgy artist? well, I have been a dentist for 11 years and have been doing emergency dentistry for 7.  I hated the first 3 years of dentistry because I did not like the business model of dentistry.  I didn’t like trying to convince patients that they needed treatment, when I felt like they didn’t.  I did like insurance dictating treatments.  In 2016, 3 years after I graduated dental school, I worked for a cosmetic/family practice in Cherry Creek, CO and this was the last straw.  It wasn’t about making smiles better it was about selling treatment and veneers.  I also was very reflective on the “Prestigious” cosmetic dentists that I had gotten to know, and most of them, even though they were good, were just in it mostly due to profit.  With a few exceptions most that I knew, did not like doing dentistry, the basics of dentistry, like fillings, single crowns, root canals, extractions.  They just wanted to do big high end procedures that the majority of the public can not afford.  I reached a conclusion at that time that dentistry was not for me, because I did not like being a salesmen. So my plan was to quit dentistry teach at the dental school, get my loans paid off, and do art airbrushing cars and creating fine art on the side.  At that time I got a part time job with an emergency dental office and it was a breathe of fresh air.  I was able to talk to patients like they were real people, I was about to show off mai tattoos, and I felt like I was helping people rather than selling them shit that they didn’t need or want to make money.  Since then I quickly became full time and now part owner of Emergency Dental America.  I feel it is the perfect niche for me because I feel like I am helping people and I get mai cosmetic/artistic fix with taking broken teeth and making them look like NOTHING has ever happened.  I put my heart and soul into dentistry and strive to make every case better and better.  Recently I have taken mai eccentric personality to social media with the intention of expressing my satirical ideas and show the werld teh passion I haz for dennistry.

Frequently assed quest chins (FAQCs)

You're a dentist and you spell like this?

I enjoy spelling creatively and satirically.  I am fully capable of spelling “properly” I just choose doesn’t do it.  Doing anything creatively gives me energy including spelling werds teh way I like.

This video probably explains it best.  Warning crude cringey satire.

Do you think you are professional in attitude and appearance?

I believe I am very professional in teh way that the U.S. Department of Labor describes it: “Professionalism does not mean wearing a suit or carrying a briefcase; rather, it means conducting oneself with responsibility, integrity, accountability, and excellence.”  I think I am very unorthodox with the traditional pretentious notions of how a professional looks and acts. Lemme ask you a quest chin first though,  how many so called professionals that dress and act the part do you really trust?  With me you get rawness, integrity, vulnerability, and realness.

Don’t you think you are a little extreme?

Yes.

What kind of dennisrty do I enjoy teh most?

I like any kind of dennisrty that changes people’s lives and makes their life better, whether that’s getting them out of pain, fixing a singlular front tooth that they chipped or cosmetic makeover…teh moar it benefits a patients life teh moar I like it.  I love changing peoples lives for the better

Do you take mai insurance?

No.

Y do I not take insurance?

I like to take my time and put mai heart and soul into every dental procedure that I do.  I like to use the best dental labs that there is and they carry a premium.  I believe in cuality over cuantity.  Do to decreased fees that insurance pays a dentist, a dentist will need to do at least 3-4 more dentistry to pay the bills.  I create art when I do dentistry and good dentistry like good art takes time.  I could not create art if I am under pressure and rushed.  I can guarantee you that you will not find another dentist out there that puts more heart and soul into their dentistry like I do.  I treat each dental procedure like an art project.  Even a filling I will take my time, use the best (expensive) materials, sculpt it, and even stain it so that you can’t even tell it was a filling.  Good dentistry, just like good art, takes time.
